NICVD’s Chest Pain Unit at Lyari General Hospital

KARACHI- The National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) in collaboration with the Government of Sindh has established its 7th Chest Pain Unit (CPU) in Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Institute of Cardiology at Sindh Government Lyari General and Teaching Hospital Karachi, in order to facilitate patients with chest pain and to provide them with easy access to treatment, free of cost.


Executive Director, NICVD, Prof Nadeem Qamar was proud to announce the establishment of this CPU. He shared statistics of this service, from May ‘2017, up till now, 50,538 people visited the chest pain units, among whom 23,138 were cardiac patients. Furthermore, 2,681patients were diagnosed to have active heart attack and were managed successfully.


He stated that, all units were functionally designed for providing quality initial emergency care to heart attack patients; and teams work tirelessly at these units, to save lives round the clock. Soon, facilities of interventional cardiology, critical care, adult and pediatric cardiology will be functional at Lyari’s outreach unit.


The NICVD introduced a new era of Cardiac Healthcare, with the launch of such Chest Pain Units. Till date, NICVD Chest Pain Units at Gulshan Chowrangi, Gulbai Flyover, Malir Halt, Qayyumabad Chowrangi and Nagan Chowrangi, and at a clinic near II Chundrigarh Road have successfully been serving people and treating hundreds of patients on daily basis.


Each Chest Pain Unit is a well-equipped facility and have appropriate diagnostic testing tools available to identify patients with an acute heart attack. Machines to resuscitate patients who become unstable are readily available. These CPUs are functionally designed to provide preliminary emergency care, free of cost. After providing initial treatment, the patient are immediately shifted to their tertiary care setup at NICVD Cath Lab.
