Health management is more important than any business - Governor Sindh

KARACHI - Governor of Sindh - Dr Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan has recently stated that; There is a dire need of healthcare managers in the medical field, as although our doctors are professionally competent and hard working but now days they also need to have additional qualities as administrators and managers at every level.

He shared these views while formally inaugurating the Institute of Health Management and Dow Diagnostic & Research Laboratory (LEJ Campus), Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS). Vice Chancellor, DUHS, Prof Masood Hameed Khan and senior faculty members of the IHM were also present on the occasion.

Dr Ishrat Ul Ebad said; Treatment issues and logistic issues were equally important, therefore good hospital administrators and clinical managers are essential for providing best possible healthcare facilities. He said “We all know the importance of MBA and BBA in marketing and finance, which improves working and business in general, so I am pleased to see that Dow University is the first medical university of Pakistan to conduct MBA and BBA courses, focusing on developing human resources in hospital administration and management.” He said health management was much more important than any business, as the lives of people are at stake. 

He said currently due to non availability of certified healthcare managers, doctors were given responsible positions only on the basis of their seniority. He congratulated Prof Masood Hameed Khan and his team for adopting international standards in all departments and institutions, to be at par with the renowned universities of the world.

Prof Masood Hameed Khan highlighted the progress of the University since its inception and also discussed the developments and up-coming projects of the University. He informed that the institute prepares graduates for careers towards senior level leadership in health services management, besides conducting research.

He further informed that; Dow University, keeping in view its vision to serve community healthcare, also established Dow Diagnostic Laboratory & Radiology Setup, which is providing reliable, high quality diagnostic services on International standards for routine and specialized tests at very economical rates to serve all socioeconomic segments of population.

Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) has established the Institute of Health Management (IHM) to promote advanced health services management through programs and research that provides outstanding practical education to students, create and disseminate applied knowledge, promote the understanding and ethical practice of business and service to the community. Currently more than 500 students are undertaking various courses at IHM.
