KARACHI - Minister for Health Sindh, Dr Sikandar Mandhro, said that breast cancer units would be made functional in six districts of Sindh province very soon as mammography machines have already been acquired for this purpose.

He said breast cancer can be detected through mammography machines at primary stages and there are 100 per cent chances of recovery of patients if breast cancer is diagnosed at an early stage.  He said an estimated 40,000 women die from breast cancer annually in Pakistan.

Sikandar Mandhro said breast cancer units would be established in Badin, Thatta, Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad, Sehwan and Shaheed Benazirabad to control the prevalence of such cases. He informed that training of doctors and support staff is underway through Atomic Energy Centre to run units effectively.

He said breast cancer units would be setup after completion of training of staff and trials of mammography machines. He said breast cancer units would be made functional in the end of January or next month. He said treatment and diagnoses of breast cancer would be made possible at early stages once units made operational.
